Friends of Gramicci: 7 Questions with Luke

Introduction

Introduction:
Welcome to the Friends of Gramicci project! We’re excited to share stories from our community, and today, we’re thrilled to introduce Luke, a passionate climber from NSW. Luke’s unique perspective blends a deep connection to nature with a strong sense of community, and he’s here to talk about his journey, inspirations, and connection with Gramicci. Let's dive into his story!

Climbing Journey and Background

1. Can you introduce yourself and share a bit about your background? How did you first get into climbing, and what drew you to the sport?

My name's Luke, and I grew up in the beautiful Blue Mountains of NSW. I began climbing as a teenager, heading to the local bouldering gym after school with my friends. I was initially drawn to the sport due to its combination of being a physical challenge while also involving an analytical, problem-solving element. However, this has grown into something much deeper—the more I climb, the more grateful I am for its impact on my life.

Love for Climbing and Lifestyle Impact

2. What do you love most about climbing, and how has the sport shaped your lifestyle, mindset, and passions beyond just the physical challenge?

For me, climbing goes far beyond the physical—it requires you to be focused, mindful, and in tune with your body, all while moving in alignment with your surrounding environment, whether that be in nature rock climbing or an indoor gym. This mindset can often lead to a state of flow—being fully present in the experience, a feeling that climbing has taught me to seek out in other ways in life.
Beyond this, climbing has a unique way of bringing people together. There's this sense of community that’s both supportive and inspiring, for climbers at all levels of experience. Sharing those moments of achievement, whether it’s sending a project or overcoming a fear, creates a connection that goes far beyond the physical act itself.
I feel like climbing also encourages a deep connection to nature, making you more attuned to the world around you. You end up learning a lot about the landscapes you’re in, the weather patterns, and the ecosystems, leading to a sense of responsibility in caring for the environment.

Favorite Climbing Locations

3. Climbing is such a unique experience that connects you with nature and the outdoors. Can you tell us about your favorite places to climb, and how these locations inspire your climbing adventures?

Climbing has taken me to some amazing places all over the world, experiencing new cultures and meeting new people. However, my favorite place to climb is the Grampians National Park, around three hours from Melbourne. The quality of the rock, the vastness, and the beauty of the landscapes make this place truly special. Since I started climbing, there have been so many climbs in the Grampians that have inspired me to improve in order to get the opportunity to climb on them.

Memorable Climbing Experiences

4. Looking back on your climbing experiences, do you have a particularly memorable moment or accomplishment that stands out?

One of the most special moments for me was climbing a route in the Blue Mountains called 'Sitting Bull' at a cliff called Elphinstone. The cliff sits perched above the valley and feels incredibly exposed. The route itself is around 35 meters in length, with lots of tricky sections. I had tried the route for six or more months, continually falling at the same section about halfway up the route.
However, there is a lot of climbing to be done after this section, and I was having particular difficulty with the last few moves as well. On this particular day, I was in a really good headspace, pulled on, and finally stuck the move I had been falling on for months. I was able to compose myself, and my mind took over as I embraced a state of flow, taking the route to the very top.
Beyond this particular experience, I have so many fond memories of beautiful days out with close friends, sharing laughs in nature. For me, these days are much more important than climbing particular routes or boulders.

Community Influence and Gear Choices

5. The climbing community often plays a big role in supporting one another. How has your involvement in this community influenced your approach to climbing and your choice of gear, activities, or even brands?

The community aspect of climbing is so important—I have met so many amazing people through this strange pursuit, who have taught me far more than how to climb a rock.
Connection to others is a value I hold highly, and climbing is an amazing vehicle to facilitate this connection. Climbing is far more than a physical pursuit, and by engaging with other members of the community, I have been able to learn different approaches to solving problems, both related to climbing and life overall. I have been incredibly fortunate to have some amazing mentors in climbing, and it's been only natural to be inspired by their approach to climbing, including the gear they choose.
Overall, being a member of the climbing community results in a shared love and appreciation for the environment—this has definitely led me to appreciate brands following sustainable practices, as well as gear that is durable.

Gramicci’s Alignment with Lifestyle

6. Climbing is both a sport and a lifestyle, and the gear you wear often reflects that. How important is it for you to have clothing that works well for both climbing and everyday life? Do you feel brands like Gramicci, with their climbing heritage, fit this style you can wear on the rocks and on the street?

Since moving to Melbourne from the Blue Mountains, the concept of having clothing that works both for climbing and everyday life became more important for me. For someone who spends a lot of time climbing but also values clothing that transitions seamlessly into everyday activities, I think this kind of versatility is incredibly important: It's practical, it reduces the need for a ton of specialized gear, and it helps avoid that awkward "I'm clearly wearing something just for outdoor sports" look when you're having a beer with a friend. Gramicci embodies the perfect blend of these factors, with an understated authenticity and comfort making it suitable for any environment.
The concept of sustainability is also really important to me. With Gramicci, you're not just getting gear that can handle the demands of climbing and the street—you're often getting pieces that are built with long-term durability in mind, made from eco-friendly materials, and designed to be timeless.

Advice for New Climbers Choosing Gear

7. What advice would you give to someone choosing their first set of climbing and outdoor gear, especially if they want it to work well for daily life too? Are there particular qualities or features you look for in clothing to ensure it’s durable, comfortable, and adaptable to different settings?

I would emphasize four key factors when choosing climbing gear and clothing—durability, sustainability, comfort, and versatility. You want gear that works well and lasts—the saying 'Buy nice, don't buy twice' rings here. Blending this with gear that is sustainably produced is also really important—engaging in an outdoor activity like climbing means we should take as much action as possible to protect the environment, so we can keep doing what we love.
Comfortable, well-fitting clothing is also important—think freedom of movement! Finally, versatility is key—being able to use gear and clothing that extends beyond just climbing means having less in general. That in itself is sustainability.
